Trump Now Holds Solid Lead Over Cruz in Iowa
Thursday CNN/ORC released new polling data for Iowa which gives Trump a whopping 37-26 lead over Ted Cruz. Cruz had been leading in the state for weeks but Trump gradually had been getting closer. In the last polling they were in a statistical tie. Although Cruz has more of a ground game there than Trump does, Trump has been holding a consistent amount of rallies and townhalls to win over Iowans.
A few factors have likely impacted Iowa voters. Trump has been bringing up the fact that Cruz didn’t support ethanol subsidies until recently. Iowa farmers make a lot of their income from this source. Another issue that has been circulating is questions as to whether Cruz is a natural born citizen. I think it’s safe to say that since he was not born in the country, the definition by the Founding Fathers would say no, he is not. However, anyone who is an American citizen can run for President. That means having a mother who was an American citizen. However, there have been arguments that his mother voted in the 1972 Canadian election and Canada did not allow dual citizenship at that time.
In addition, Cruz did not even give up his Canadian dual citizenship until 16 months ago. One has to wonder how the Founding Fathers felt about this since the purpose of being a citizen was for a person to be loyal only to the United States.
Whether the issue is valid or not is beside the point now. Other issues that are valid have hurt the Cruz campaign and the stance on ethanol subsidies is probably the one that hit him hardest.
Trump has been relentless about his desire to win Iowa even if he can win the nomination without it which seems inevitable at this point.
Bernie Sanders is also beating Hillary in Iowa by 51-43%. Trump has said he would love to run against him. He just might get his wish.
